Your Adventure

A friend on an adventure. I look on with admiration. Why do I feel such regret, a voyeur on the sideline of brave souls in search of more? Maybe it is the void felt when your desired journey lacks embrace by those in your life? Maybe it is the cowardly feeling of needing affirmation, even adoration? The strength of my heart, my convictions are called into question.
What is it about adventure that attracts so many men? The sneers from those who attribute such quests to mid-life turmoil miss the point of existential pain. These are not questions of purpose as much as they are challenges to boundaries and expectations. Capacity untested that plant seeds in the minds and hearts as the black dog looks on from the underbrush. Do not venture too far from the well-worn path or risk the attack of mortality. But mortality tracks your every movement. The only question is will it capture a full heart or absent soul?
A quest is needed. Not a quest that answers the stubbornness of a petulant, older man. Rather, a quest that promises to bear fruit on the branches that wither from lack of inspiration. Maybe its not a singular quest, but a series of quests that meander and wind to a vision forged by discoveries along the way. The only certainty is that regardless of the quest, it begins with a single step. Does the direction of this step matter or the embrace of courage to cast aside the forces that tether you to the ethos of others? A lone voice speaks from the darkness. I must pay attention.
