The Formula

I have spent the last half-decade exploring the thoughts and opinions of a disparate agglomeration of philosophers, theologians, psychotherapists, sages, and self-help gurus. This journey has been propelled by my passion for rethinking my life and rebuilding it in a way that serves as a solid foundation for tomorrow and beyond. This process speaks to the fundamental reason why I started this blog, to document this process for my personal narrative and hopefully to the benefit of men wrestling with the same issues. It has been a circuitous journey and at times, confusing and frustrating.
During a recent walk, I was listening to a podcast of Andrew Huberman, a neurobiologist at Stanford University. The title of the podcast was “Do This for 90 Seconds for 7 Days”. Huberman outlines various behaviors that – if followed every day – will transform your life. Sure, I know the digital world is filled with self-anointed thought leaders with the perfect formula for transforming your life, becoming a millionaire, becoming a magnet for the opposite sex, blah blah blah. Nevertheless, Huberman is a scientist that bases his thoughts on research, and he does it with a level of humility and logic. In other words, I view him as credible.
As Huberman outlined the actions and behaviors that should be followed as we begin our days, I started to connect the dots between what he recommended and what I was already doing. As I quickly realized, the uniformity was uncanny. I was Huberman’s paradigm. To the tee, I was doing all the things – and I mean all – that Huberman was recommending. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? But what is particularly interesting and important to note, I feel better today than I have in decades. That may sound a little melodramatic, but it’s the truth.
I am not suggesting that there is a magic formula or script that if followed will lead to nirvana. What I am suggesting is that if we walk with our ears and eyes wide open and do a deep dive into the thoughts and ideas of appropriately selected thinkers, we may be able to cobble together a formula that moves us forward with clarity and purpose. It’s not a one-size fits all recipe, but my own 7-step program that speaks to me and my future. Start putting together your formula and let me know how it works for you.
