Is it our destiny to wander? We are children of seekers who – under considerable risk and hardship – sought better ways to live. Why should we be any different? Sure, our forefathers were dealing with fundamental questions of safety and survival. For many of us, what sparks our unrest are first-world challenges of self-actualization. But does this diminish the forces of our DNA and our pursuits for something better, whatever that may mean to each of us?
The retort from those who view stasis as an admirable destination is to question the wanderer’s discontent. But is stasis a natural condition for man? For some maybe but for those who constantly set off in new directions the idea of non-movement is the cure worse than the disease. Maybe this is life’s tradeoff; unsettled feelings of the wanderer or the stagnation of those who are restricted by their deep roots.
The wanderer is constantly seeking new avenues that promise souls discovery. As we age, the possibility that our purpose may be an illusion, ephemeral at best haunts our journeys. But this knowledge does not dissuade us. The fire that burns is white hot and only death douses the flame. To die without feeling the flame is to surrender. That is a fate worse than death.
So, we will continue to wander, explore, test, and move on. We are in pursuit of something, a spark that emanates from the heart and puts us on the path etched in our souls. This is the path of a wanderer, a difficult path the tests our strength and begs for criticism from life’s victims. Make no apologies for we are on the right path, regardless of the dead ends and wrong turns.
