Enters A Sage

It is easy to become controlled by false narratives, stories you tell yourself about your abilities and future. What is the source of these so-called truths that reside in the deepest recesses of your mind? Past experiences, media, family, culture, or just feelings of self-doubt? I am not worthy, the retort of those who suffer from imposter syndrome. This resonates with me.
When you least expect it, a sage enters your life that resets everything. Just as your self-imposed constraints roll off your tongue, the message comes back, “who said?”. At first you are knocked off balance, then your senses focus, and you begin to listen and learn. Stories about real struggles and the cruelty that life sometimes deals you. A personal journey that in life’s later years is looked back upon with appreciation and gratitude. A life well lived. An older sage full of anticipation of tomorrow’s promise and a warning against those who want to get in the way. In that moment, my worries dissipate, and renewed energy ripples through my body.
In that conversation I was schooled about the right way to live my life. I was reminded of the many privileges and opportunities that surround me. I was gently scolded about my self-imposed constraints, the limits to my aspirations. I was humbled, but also inspired. We are all surrounded by sages, but we dismiss those who have grey or white hair as being irrelevant and out of touch. We couldn’t be more wrong. Look up and look around. A sage may be waiting to guide you. Make sure you are open to the gift.
