A book club for aging men. Monthly meetings over food and drink, conversations frequently meandering through a variety of topics unrelated to the assigned book. The genesis of this ritual is to read books that touch upon the issues that should be on the mind of men such as us. Existential questions to find meaning behind our diverse paths that have led us to this moment and will propel us forward. Books are assigned by individuals on a rotating basis, providing insight into the diversity of interests that each of us harbor. Not all books are universally liked or welcomed, yet the discipline exposes each to paths that otherwise would never have been explored.
A recent convening took an unusual turn in response to a question posed, what is our purpose in these readings? Questions were asked and responses were offered. A few tears emerged in the eyes of some, crackling voices exposing memories that left deep marks in the hearts and souls of the brethren. We are all human and our lives have included periods of happiness, and periods of hurt and despair. As men, we are seldom afforded the opportunity to safely share these feelings, or we run from these opportunities to hide the kinks in our armor. These periods are cathartic and hopefully add clarity to our individual journeys.
So, what are our future aspirations? Visions of grand adventures, efforts to challenge our mortality and reset the very essence that define us as unique individuals? Or visions of quiet and solace? Maybe life has been challenging enough and the thought of voluntarily embarking on rough waters is not the path of self-actualization. There is no right choice. Some are satisfied with where they are, and who they are. Some are unsettled and feel there is something more. The paths are many, but personal agency is the common thread. To change direction or hold fast are equally acceptable. The important thing is to have your hand on the tiller and to follow the course you set, not others. Godspeed gentlemen.
