A Call To Arms

I frequently move between feelings of optimism and hope to feelings of frustration and being lost. What is it that points me in either direction? I enjoy reading when it is informative, provocative, positive, objective, and peppered with seeds of wisdom. Reading frequently lights the pilot to the furnace of my positive disposition. So, I’ve answered half the question. But what is the source for my less than positive feelings?

Sometimes the answers to life’s questions are so obvious that we completely look past them. For me, watching the news is something I desperately try to avoid. The same holds true for much of the conversations in social media. From my vantage point, it’s the toxic conversations in our society that are the source of our malaise. Do the purveyors of social media rants or biased, attacking comments on television and radio media channels understand the damage of their behaviors. To be honest, I don’t think they care. I’ve now answered the other half of the question, which is why I quickly walk away from those who like to spread manure.

There needs to be an new type of conversation in our society, one built on listening, understanding, empathy, critical thinking, and positivity. Each and every one of us has the responsibility to lead “the way” because this way does not sell in a culture of sensationalism and anger. If it does not sell, don’t expect our so-called leaders to take up the call. Those who control our Great Nation’s narrative are more interested in a winner-take-all game or viewer ratings. This is our world and we need to start becoming the architects of a new narrative. I’m ready, are you? I recently posted an idea on Facebook to assemble a group of men who would meet monthly for casual conversation around various issues and reading material. I received a dozen enthusiastic responses from an interesting group of guys. The ground rules are critical thinking, maturity, empathy and positivity. Can you imagine what would happen if these types of conversations became the norm? I feel optimistic.
