Fortunate Is The Man Who Lives His Life Uncommonly

Jerry Dennis - The River Home

There’s safety in staying in a rut, or so it seems with most people. FYI, that includes me. At least a rut gives you predictability, even if the status quo is incongruent with your dreams. To attempt jumping out of the rut requires you to face the fear of the unknown. What if you fail? What if you crash? Maybe people will laugh at you, so quick to judge as they wallow in their own malaise.

I have a tradition of making changes in my life at the beginning of every New Year, cleaning the deck if you will. For example, I’m in the process of transforming my office by replacing the big corporate desk with a stand-up desk. Throw in a coffee table and couch; I now have a work environment that recharges my batteries, which helps me remain focused on both my job responsibilities, as well as my personal pursuits. In fact, I’m sitting at that desk right now, listening to some blues on Pandora, and writing this blog post. It’s a great day because I am doing something to advance an uncommon life. If people don’t understand my decisions and behaviors, I’m OK with that because I choose to live with purpose. Sure, I frequently fail but it’s not for trying.

It’s a blustery winter day and the tires on your car are tracking that well-worn rut in the snow left by so many cars before you. You know you are on the wrong road but you fear the possibility of losing control as you try to escape the rut to take the next exit ramp to new direction. Stay steady my friend, no sudden jerks of the wheel, lay off the accelerator and gently move towards the exit. Enjoy your journey and live with purpose, on your own terms.
