A Classic

Are you beginning to think that your body is wearing out? Maybe it’s the more frequent visits to the doctor and as sundry of specialists that’s swaying your opinion? I for one have never been a big fan of visiting the doctor. I think it’s a guy thing. No matter how sick I felt or how swollen the ankle became, my standard response was “it will get better.” After all, doctors are for weenies! Let’s not forget how many people die every year due to medical mistakes. We all know that the hospital is the least healthy place to be. Drugs weaken the body’s resiliency to respond to, and fight infections. I could go on with my typical retorts every time my wife suggested a visit to the doctor.

Three years ago I began the routine of annual visits to my primary doctor. This lead to a visit with the cardiologist to investigate an indistinguishable, at least to me, variation in my EKG, as explained by my primary doctor. Then there was the visit to the gastroenterologist (aka Roto-Rooter Man) for the colonoscopy. My doctor is also suggesting a visit to the dermatologist to remove that mole, just in case it might emerge into something more onerous. What the heck, are these guys in collusion? Maybe they’re receiving kickbacks, the medical industry’s version of finder fees.

I have chosen to look at this phase in my life through a different filter. My body isn’t breaking down; I’m just paying more attention. It’s like when you lease a car and you’re not as diligent in its ongoing upkeep and scheduled maintenance. What the heck, I’ll be turning this model in for a newer, sexier model in three years. This throwaway mentality numbs us to the beauty of older things and the loving care their owners display. You know what I mean when you stop to admire that beautiful classic car rolling down the street. I can guarantee you that its owner doesn’t skip on any preventive maintenance.

So men, we are classics worthy of fastidious maintenance of our equipment. This is not a sign of weakness or decline; it’s a sign of quality and being a classic. Muscle–bound lover boys are a dime a dozen and are frequently very shallow. However, people will stop to admire a well-groomed older man who exemplifies physical and intellectual health and strength. Unfortunately, these older men are becoming increasingly rare. Thus, I am challenging you to make your self-improvement your number-one priority. It’s not too late. Set your goals and communicate them to me. Together, we’ll redefine the process of aging, which is different than getting older.
