Our most important possession is time. Time is finite and how we chose to spend it says a lot about who we are and where we are going, or not going. I’ve made some progress in my journey but I know it’s far short of what’s necessary. I have no one to blame but myself. Sure I work everyday and the normal responsibilities of life have a tendency to make their withdrawals from my time account. But that’s just an excuse. You can’t bullshit the person you see every morning in the mirror.
While sitting on the couch polishing off a bottle of wine with my wife, my time gets spent watching Mario Lopez on Extra, which becomes a stint with America’s Ninja Warriors, The Voice, or America’s Got Talent. Oh, and God help me if my daughter’s home and the Bachelorette is on. Man is that show pitiful! Before I know it, my body and mind have checked out and the bed is calling. I’ve just wasted three hours of my life, time that could have been spent working on my second stage in life. I’ll never be able to get that time back.
So here is my personal throw-down (yes, I’ve also been watching Bobby Flay on the cooking channel). I challenge myself to spend my time more wisely. I have to eliminate television from my daily activities and significantly reduce consumption of alcohol. For me, these are the two things that are time zappers. My wife will not be happy with this decision because this is time we spend together, although the quality of this time is in serious question. That translate into 750 to 1,000 hours more per year that I can spend on pursuing a life full of passion and personal growth. And what will I do with this newfound time? How about grow! The ROI on my time has not been good. It’s never too late to begin investing wisely.
