We frequently seek the 12-step program to physical, financial and/or emotional health. If someone could just lay down the breadcrumbs, we will follow to bliss. The cold reality is that it’s never that easy. Mason Currey chronicles the routines and habits of many of the world’s most famous creators and artists from the late 18th century to current times in his book Daily Rituals. There are two takeaways from Currey’s book. First, there is no magic recipe in terms of rituals. Rituals are as varied as personalities. Some work late, others work early. Some work in marathon sessions, others work in short bursts. Some live lives of hermits, others are social. Some are family men or women while others live ascetic lives. Let’s not forget the crutch of substance abuse including amphetamines to stoke your fire and barbiturates to put you to sleep. The rituals are unlimited.

The second takeaway from Currey’s book is that there is one common denominator to all the artists studied and that is discipline. Regardless of the ritual, unyielding discipline to following one’s ritual is unwavering. Is this where we fail? Do we lack the discipline to achieve inspiration and passion in our lives? Or, have we simply failed to realize the right ritual? I think we all know under what circumstances our productivity and creativity is maximized. I will venture to say that our primary problem is that we let others get in the way of our efforts to remain loyal to what works best for us. It’s time that we carve out personal space and conditions that enable us to focus on our creative selves. Let those around us know that our rituals are sacred and will not be compromised. It’s time that we bring discipline to our lives. As for the amphetamines and barbiturates, you may want to find a healthier crutch. Be well fellow Boomers.
