Even Lawyers Can Be Creative

Of course they can. I said that just to get your attention. Being funny though is a whole different situation. Stop it Scott! Oh, the lawyer jokes are just ready to explode. I met up with my organization’s lawyer for a couple glasses of vino in Providence. Now my lawyer, let’s call him John, is really good at what he does. He’s also a Marine and Vietnam era veteran. That means his word means something and his integrity is unwavering.

I may give the impression that our current careers just plain suck. That’s not true and in the case of my lawyer, I can honestly say he enjoys what he does. But even within our current careers we can find new branches that bring out our creative sides. For John, he’s a writer. Of course he is, that’s what lawyers do. Wait, I mean he is a real writer. See, he has written a couple books on legal issues pertaining to land use and environmental principles relating to waterfront properties. Oh please, yawn! I have a copy of his book next to my bed in case a bout of insomnia strikes. I’m just being a jerk now. Really, this is an interesting venture for John because he is writing for the laymen. And if that’s not enough, he’s produced a manuscript of a novel based in the world he knows, the legal profession. Like me, John has no desire to retire. As he stated, I’ll continue to practice for maybe eight more years and then I’ll move on to writing full time. This is the stuff that just inspires me. This is what this blog is all about. I’m really interested in what drives men in their second stage of life to switch gears as opposed to putting the car on cruise control. Hey, did I tell you about the CDC switching from using rats to using lawyers in their research? I just can’t help myself.
