Do You Really Want It?

I like to listen to the Ask Gary Vee Show, an online Q&A show hosted by none other than Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary is a digital marketing thought leader who is as brash as you would expect for someone from New Jersey. What’s particularly interesting is the type of questions that many of the callers ask. It’s as if they’re asking Gary to personally solve the problems their experiencing in growing a business. Although some of the questions are tactical in nature and therefore warrant conversation, many of the questions are simply answered by “more hustle”. See, Gary is a big advocate of hustle. If you want something, you have to be willing to work harder and longer to achieve it. In a recent episode, Gary showed a facial expression that indicated frustration when hearing a caller’s question. His answer was rough and direct, “so many of you say you want something but you’re not willing to put the extra hours in to achieve it. You’d rather watch four hours of Games of Thrones or go out with your buddies after work to have drinks. You say you want something but I really don’t think you do.” Ouch!

When I look in the mirror, the words of Gary Vaynerchuk haunt me. See, I want a new and enriching life. Although I have made some progress in moving the needle, my progress falls far short of my expectations. Why is that? I believe I really want it, but my actions might tell a different story. Whether its writing more, aggressively building an online community, shedding pounds around the waistline, drinking less, etc., I frequently feel other “priorities” demanding my attention or excuses validating incongruent behaviors. Rachel Rubin recently stated in an interview with Chase Jarvis that it’s not about setting goals. It’s about developing good habits. Good habits will get you to where you need to go. It’s time for this guy to look hard in the mirror on a daily basis and ask the question, do you really want it? Are you acting like it? No excuses, just hard work. That’s what Vaynerchuk demands from himself. Why shouldn’t I?
