The Noise! The Noise!

In defense of the Luddites in the world, technology does have its downside. I have frequently referenced in these posts the value of digitalization and the web in neutering the gatekeepers and empowering individuals to strike out on their own. Our digital world has given us access to a profusion of data and information. Our capacity to translate this information into knowledge and wisdom however is still the responsibility of the consumer. On the downside, our digitally connected world has given unlimited access by the purveyors of opinions and dogma to our mobile devices and TVs. As a consequence, the noise has become increasingly one-sided and divisive. Am I wrong or has the art of critical discussion and debate given way to who can yell the loudest or throw out the most skewed “facts”?

I recently watched a London-based interview of Gary Vaynerchuk. The individual interviewing Gary asked the expected political question attempting to get Gary to opine on the 2016 U.S. Presidential Primary. In other words, he wanted Gary to say something about Donald Trump. What impressed me was Gary’s unwillingness to be dragged into the discussion. As Gary quipped, who ever is elected will have no impact on ME. Next question please. In other words, Vaynerchuk is on a mission and to damn with whomever wants to get in his way. This is the right answer in a Nation that has become so Balkanized along political party lines. If you haven’t read the recent data from the Pew Research Center regarding this fissure in our society, you need to. It’s damn scary.

As I travel in my second stage of life, I strive to block news channels and web-based loudmouths with their constant barrage of negativity, hatred and skewed visions. I don’t want to add to the noise. I want to appeal to others’ sense of optimism and hunger for continued growth and prosperity. I think that’s what us more mature guys can offer to our communities. Using our deep experience and introspection, we can build the bridges that our communities and society so badly need. It certainly enhances the chances for a good night’s sleep.
